The journey from an academic researcher to a successful entrepreneur

05.11.2019 | 18:00 - 20:00

How different is an academic mindset from the startup mindset? Why aren’t there more scientists who are entrepreneurs?

In the special edition of WORLDCHANGERS IN TECH Meetup @Berlin Science Week, we will host a panel discussion on the process behind the commercialization of technology coming from academic scientists and its contribution to innovation and economic growth. Together with speakers from academia and startup world, we will discuss skills needed for entrepreneurial success, along with challenges and opportunities that research-based start-ups face. To pursue our mission of supporting tech entrepreneurship for more sustainable life, we are also focusing on UN Sustainable Development Goal(s):

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

Prof. Dr. Jan Kratzer, Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management and Academic Director of Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE) at Berlin Institute of Technology, Germany

Prof. Dr. René Mauer, Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at ESCP Europe’s Berlin Campus and Academic Director of the Executive Master in Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurial Leadership (EMDIEL)

In September 2015, a UN Summit launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a vision to radically improve our lives, end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Not only the social and environmental, but also the economic benefits are overwhelming in their estimates. Yet, with the current pace of progress, it is completely impossible to meet the targets by 2030.

At GERMANTECH, we strongly believe that entrepreneurship is the most powerful way to innovate and technology is a critical enabler in developing solutions to the most urgent problems our society faces. Once a month, we organize WORLDCHANGERS IN TECH Meetups, with individuals from all sectors, with a strong entrepreneurial mindset and approach, embracing tech in their work and open to share their learnings. These Meetups enable and facilitate a discussion among diverse stakeholders on tech solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future. Each month, we focus on a specific challenge related to at least one of the SDGs and technological solutions that make the most impact.
