Architecture as a total work of art: 2021 KDAA International Architecture Exhibition

17.12.2021 | 12:00 - 08.01.2022 | 16:00

Architecture reflects both scientific developments and different cultural imprints of people in different places. Moreover, in the context of their urban landscape and cultural-historical backgrounds, buildings are more than just the sum of their individual parts; they can also reshape their surroundings in their own way.

Architecture is a work of art in its entirety: for it not only touches on social, economic and scientific areas, but also combines them with an aesthetic diversity.

Through a close connection of formal languages, tasks and artistic freedom, architecture can be understood as a holistic artistic creative process from whose results infinite possibilities of interpretation can be derived.

Korea and Germany have been linked by a multi-layered exchange since 1883: Both countries are close partners in the enforcement of human rights and measures against climate change. In addition, the two countries are linked by their historical experiences with national divisions.

The Korea Germany Architecture Association (KDAA) is a non-profit organization that aims to promote and expand active exchange between Korean and German architects.

This year’s KDAA event, Architecture as a Total Work of Art, combines an international building exhibition with a series of lectures presenting twelve representative buildings by architects and architectural firms from both countries.

The works go beyond the one-dimensional design aspect and show diverse examples of building projects with their own formal language. Also presented are sustainable ecological architectural designs that have been inspired by nature, as well as buildings in which an attempt has been made to merge the past and the future. These buildings not only reflect the city’s identity, but also expand its horizons. This exhibition aims to provide a forum for architects from both countries to interact with each other and jointly develop a future-oriented building culture.
